Tree Removal & Recycling

All of our handmade wood products are made from recycled trees that had to come down from homes or developments. We hate to see trees come down, but sometimes tree roots are causing home foundation damage, at risk of falling, etc. If you need to remove a tree, contact us below, and we’ll connect you to one of our certified partnering arborists, who’ll give you a discount for recycling the tree with us. Normally other arborists charge $500-1000 to chip and dispose the tree. We pass this savings onto you!

What trees can we recycle?

We recycle a wide range of urban species, including redwood, cedar, pine, cypress, oak, eucalyptus, and more.

Trees must be at least 24 inches diameter at “breast height” for us to recycle them. See how to measure diameter at breast height.

When are we NOT able to recycle?

If you’ve already started working with an arborist, and they are cutting down your tree right now as we speak, we will not be able to recycle your tree. Unfortunately, many arborists (esp. ones who are unlicensed and uninsured) do not have the equipment and training to cut the tree into logs that are able to be repurposed. Reach out to us to get connected with our list of certified partnering arborists who can help you recycle your tree.

If you only found out about us after you had already chosen an arborist, no worries — fill out the form and we’ll see if they’re willing to recycle.

Products Made from Recycled Trees

Live Edge Solid Wood Standing Desk
from $1,500.00

The Award Winner: a double live-edge redwood ergonomic desk with a custom blended natural oil-based coat. Built to order in West Oakland using sustainably sourced redwood milled in the Livermore Valley and Danish adjustable standing desk legs from StandDesk.

Bay Area Redwood’s natural wood products are custom, unique pieces; no two pieces are the same. For this reason, product characteristics like grain pattern, live edge, and even exact dimensions can vary. Wood furniture products may vary as much as 4 inches in length or width and 1 inch in thickness.

For furniture items with a sustainable custom blend oil coat, a natural patina will develop over time. The original color may fade as oil dries due to sun and air exposure, but the process is entirely natural. You can choose to continually develop your wood product’s natural patina for a rustic, natural look. If you’d like to restore the vibrant colors and defined grain patterns of your slab, you can easily apply a light coat of coconut oil every 6 months.

The Tree Recycling & Reclamation Process

Learn more about how a tree gets recycled at Bay Area Redwood.

Felling

We hate to see it happen, but trees are felled everyday for a variety of reasons. Some causes are natural including erosion, senescence, and wildfire while others are purely anthropogenic such as space for housing developments, invasive roots, and property damage. Whatever the reason, Bay Area Redwood works with partnering arborists to cut these trees into large segment upon removal. Once the tree is out of the ground, we haul it to our log recycling yard located in Livermore.

Milling & Curing

After logs are dropped at our facility, the manufacturing stages of the process begin. We start by milling each log into slabs or dimensional lumber, which are then stacked to optimize air flow for the drying process. Milled wood dries at varying rates depending on species, dimensions, and weather conditions, but it can cure at our facility for as long as 3 years before it is ready for finishing.

Finishing

Cured slabs are either sold rough or sent to our fabricator, Luis, in West Oakland. Luis employs his woodworking prowess to surface and sand the slab to create a smooth, flat surface for furniture. Then slabs are sealed using a variety of finishes from natural oil blends to conversion varnish before USA made steel legs are attached. Then they are brought directly to a customer, to our showroom in San Ramon, or our warehouse in Livermore, and, ba-da-bing, you have your finished table!
