Sea Ranch, CA

The House of Four Ecologies is a passion project between four architect friends, blending this 1,600-square-foot house into the Sea Ranch landscape. 12’ Mosaic Art Sculpture

Emeryville, CA

One of the more unique public art installations we contributed to is this 12-foot-tall mosaic sculpture for the Rotten City Cultural District (RCCD) in Emeryville. The concept was to encapsulate the district’s slogan, 'Rotten City builds fertile ground,' by utilizing the various elements that compose an urban environment—breaking them apart and reassembling them to create a natural, cohesive image. Bay Area Redwood supplied the salvaged wood for this monumental piece, which integrates a diverse array of materials including stone, concrete, steel, mosaic tiles, clay, and living plants.

Through CMG Landscape Architecture, Bay Area Redwood was able to lend its expertise on what locally sourced urban wood materials could work for the Marin Academy courtyard project. This project is part of Marin Academy’s Vision 2050 plan to create beautiful communal spaces around the campus. Working alongside CMG Landscape Architecture and BUILD Group Inc, we provided sustainably sourced Monterey Cypress Decking for this outdoor seating area, a material deeply rooted in the local landscape. The cypress provides a warm and bright color when freshly cut and oiled and then oxidizes with a beautiful silver patina that shimmers in the sun and will continue to provide beauty and function to the space.

Play Area at Alamo Plaza Shopping Center

Alamo, CA

An area that is equal parts public art and nature space, this sandbox at Alamo Plaza Shopping Center—spearheaded by ABG Art Group—encourages both art appreciation and play. Bay Area Redwood supplied salvaged black walnut for the custom-carved sculptural piece, as well as walnut for the seating blocks and redwood for the stumps scattered throughout. By utilizing these salvaged materials, we create a tactile environment where the raw beauty of art and the ruggedness of nature play seamlessly intersect, inviting children to engage with the natural world through creative exploration.

Bay Area Trail Bridges

We partner with Park Districts, Friends of Sausal Creek, Scouts, and volunteers year-round to repair and construct bridges around the Bay Area. We provide the materials, milling, and expertise to turn timbers that would have entered the waste stream into park and trail bridges. Bridges also double as a tool to minimize contamination in the watershed from hikers in the area, contributing to both trail and water conservation efforts.

Private Residence Walkway

Working with Topophyla and Oscito on this private residence landscape project, we recommended our eucalyptus 10x10s to be the support system for the redwood slab walkway. We know that eucalyptus has a bad reputation as an invasive species, with highly flammable sap and leaves, but once the lumber is properly dried and treated, the strength, hardness, and durability of the wood make it perfect for the walkway foundation.

Using cypress logs that were sourced onsite, we followed the designs by LMS Architects to create custom seating and furnishings for this entryway at the Herz Recreation Center. By salvaging wood from the site and turning it into furnishings, we ensure that the new pieces are made from the most sustainable materials, prolong the metaphorical lives of these trees, create pieces that are unique to the site and the area, and prevent waste. Our team was able to mill the two block benches and center stump seating, keeping the live edge imperfections while making them safe to use and interact with.

Belmont Village Senior Home

San Ramon, CA

This was of our favorite reuse projects with Bishop Ranch. Bishop Ranch took down an old property of office buildings to turn into a senior home and a future park. We helped removed all the trees around the property, stored and cured them, and worked with the client and architects to design furnishes back into the same property. Here you’ll see the ash trees from the property turned into dining tables for the residents of Belmont Village Senior Home to enjoy! We also fabricated additional table tops, shelving, seating, and outdoor benches from our recycled redwood from Bay Area.
