This large-scale public park installation showcases Deodar Cedar throughout, from a 40-foot S-shaped picnic table and bench to six concrete seat wall toppers, paired with a matching set of chairs and coffee tables. Feature log benches in Canary Island Pine and Coast Live Oak add further character to the site. The Deodar Cedar itself carries its own reclaimed story: it was sourced from Bishop Branch 6 (Summer Hill Homes), meaning the wood came full circle back into the very community it was harvested from.

Nestled among a grove of mature redwoods, this nature play library extension transforms salvaged Eucalyptus and Redwood into an immersive, tactile learning environment for children. Our team supplied Redwood paneling/siding and custom millwork, along with natural Redwood log posts - debarked, sanded, and sealed - that frame the space. A series of Eucalyptus log crossings, a log tunnel, and log benches invite hands-on exploration. Stump seating threads through the redwood grove itself, blending the built structures seamlessly into the existing landscape. The result is a nature play environment on a genuinely special site - one of the best examples of the connection between built play and native landscape that we've produced.

How urban infrastructure can be both ecologically functional and a model for the circular economy. At the core of this project is a custom swale system and decking designed to capture and treat stormwater runoff. We provided custom-milled salvaged Monterey cypress for the site’s monumental blocks and decking. The trees were originally removed during an SFPUC project, diverted from the waste system.

Sushi Kinsen is a high-end omakase sushi experience restaurant. We supplied the Monterey Cypress for the main bar and the wood screen in the front that blocks the waiting room from the dining area. Monterey Cypress adds a deep, rich shade to the bar, making it feel warm and inviting. The back of the bar is made from a Japanese cedar, creating a symbolic merging of the Japanese wood and locally salvaged Monterey Cypress.

One of the more unique public art installations we contributed to is this 12-foot-tall mosaic sculpture for the Rotten City Cultural District (RCCD) in Emeryville. The concept was to encapsulate the district’s slogan, 'Rotten City builds fertile ground,' by utilizing the various elements that compose an urban environment—breaking them apart and reassembling them to create a natural, cohesive image. Bay Area Redwood supplied the salvaged wood for this monumental piece, which integrates a diverse array of materials including stone, concrete, steel, mosaic tiles, clay, and living plants.

Through CMG Landscape Architecture, Bay Area Redwood was able to lend its expertise on what locally sourced urban wood materials could work for the Marin Academy courtyard project. This project is part of Marin Academy’s Vision 2050 plan to create beautiful communal spaces around the campus. Working alongside CMG Landscape Architecture and BUILD Group Inc, we provided sustainably sourced Monterey Cypress Decking for this outdoor seating area, a material deeply rooted in the local landscape. The cypress provides a warm and bright color when freshly cut and oiled and then oxidizes with a beautiful silver patina that shimmers in the sun and will continue to provide beauty and function to the space.
