When we work with schools and higher education, our main goal is to integrate natural elements into the campus environment, specifically designed to encourage free play and establish an early connection between the students and the natural environment. For this project, we supplied custom site furnishings designed for Nature Play, including redwood stools, tables, and various play elements. Redwood was our choice to provide durable, tactile, and naturally beautiful furnishings that support sensory exploration and imaginative play.

Private Residence Walkway

San Leandro, CA

Working with Topophyla and Oscito on this private residence landscape project, we recommended our eucalyptus 10x10s to be the support system for the redwood slab walkway. We know that eucalyptus has a bad reputation as an invasive species, with highly flammable sap and leaves, but once the lumber is properly dried and treated, the strength, hardness, and durability of the wood make it perfect for the walkway foundation.

Teaming up with Boxleaf Design, we crafted dozens of play structure elements for this custom-designed playground. Starting with curvy oak tree branches serving as hand railings, we also fabricated log steppers, redwood posts joined together with monkey bars, feature logs, and a Monterey cypress log tunnel. Assembled and placed together intentionally to create a space to foster creativity, safety, and play for many years to come.

Herz Recreation Center

Herz Recreation Center Site Furnishings

San Francisco, CA

Using cypress logs that were sourced onsite, we followed the designs by LMS Architects to create custom seating and furnishings for this entryway at the Herz Recreation Center. By salvaging wood from the site and turning it into furnishings, we ensure that the new pieces are made from the most sustainable materials, prolong the metaphorical lives of these trees, create pieces that are unique to the site and the area, and prevent waste. Our team was able to mill the two block benches and center stump seating, keeping the live edge imperfections while making them safe to use and interact with.

This was of our favorite reuse projects with Bishop Ranch. Bishop Ranch took down an old property of office buildings to turn into a senior home and a future park. We helped removed all the trees around the property, stored and cured them, and worked with the client and architects to design furnishes back into the same property. Here you’ll see the ash trees from the property turned into dining tables for the residents of Belmont Village Senior Home to enjoy! We also fabricated additional table tops, shelving, seating, and outdoor benches from our recycled redwood from Bay Area.

Elevating Luxury Residences With Reclaimed Wood

Atherton, CA

Here is an example of how reclaimed wood can enhance a private luxury space. Redwood was our choice for the space due to its deep, rich color and durability. Our goal at Bay Area Redwood is to keep felled and salvaged wood out of the waste system by prolonging their legacies in other forms. Adding reclaimed wood to luxury, private, and even public spaces adds character and life. We'd like to thank the hardworking teams at Studio Green and Conscapes for making pieces like this bench possible.

Stanford University Tree Recycling and Removal

As beautiful as the end products we make from salvaged wood are, it's important to highlight the expertise, hard work, precautions, and considerations required for taking down and harvesting the trees beforehand. It is our privilege to serve as the Project Manager for this multi-year tree salvaging project alongside ZGF Architects, Interstice Architects, Whiting-Turner, Parkwest, and Hamilton Tree Service Inc. Together, we safely removed huge Coast Live Oak trees and a Blue Oak, ensuring they came down in the safest way that minimizes ecological damage to the area. We at Bay Area Redwood will now utilize the wood harvested from this project, transforming it into products for campus use and other projects to continue the trees' long legacy.

Joaquin Miller Elementary School

Elementary School Playground

Oakland, CA

This playground project at Joaquin Miller Elementary School is a great example of community investing in youth education and well-being. After receiving funding and support from the Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation and KABOOM!, JDD Landscape Architecture proceeded to transform the brutally hot and empty blacktop into a natural playground using the materials we supplied. The design intent was to be inspired by the surrounding Oakland Hills, forests, and creeks and bring nature back to the playground while also honoring the legacy of what used to be a Boy Scout campground.

Private Residence Oak Tree Removal

Atherton, CA

It's always hard when old trees need to come down due to wood rot, but at Bay Area Redwood, we work hard to make sure they are taken down and harvested in the most safe and sustainable way possible. Safety cannot be compromised when it comes to responsible urban forestry, and we knew working alongside our collaborators, Boxleaf Design and Hamilton Tree Service Inc., we'd be able to ensure a safe removal. Our involvement will make sure this beautiful, old oak tree won't be put in the waste system and will instead be used in other furnishing and material supply projects, further extending its life and legacy.

We strive to find the most sustainable and practical uses for all harvested trees; even logs that don’t have much lumber value can be used to bring character and connection to outdoor spaces. For Ancora Place, we selected one such log that, due to the strain on the inside, was unusable as building material but would be perfect for nature exploration in the interior courtyard space. Two secondary branches were also added to the space to add character and functionality.

One of the heritage trees in front of Kingscote Gardens that needed to come down due to decay. 2 benches that came from this tree sit here today for students to enjoy and remember the tree.

Heartbreaking to see, but several of the huge heritage Coast Live Oak trees on Stanford campus had fallen due to heavy winds in 2023, and several others were deemed necessary to come down due to decay that had rendered the trees likely to fall in the next windstorm.

We were grateful to help with the full process from safe removal, all the way to co-designing and fabricating the benches and tables to fabricate from these trees.

The benches and tables now sit all throughout Stanford campus for students and faculty to enjoy, including Kingscote Gardens, Lake Lagunita, and Faculty Club.
